Youth are what brings us together
Hello readers thank you for watching and reading my blog today, this is going to be my first post and I’m going to be talking about the importance of youth participation. To start off your participation in any community is very important because youth are the leaders of tomorrow.
What we need is a lot of youth and young people coming together to talk about issues and their opinions pertaining to youth today I think that society is very important in bringing about the ideas and innovations of you because we have a lot of potential I think that it is important for us to talk about all of these ideas that we have and bring them to life.
I think that we have a lot of key areas to focus on especially with the environment and climate change being one of the biggest issues according to the United Nations report a study shows that there are less than 12 years before climate change and global warming affects are not going to be reversible. This means that the damage will become permanent I think that this is very important for all of us to realize that this is a climate emergency!
What we need to do is not sit there and listen on our phones or talk to our politicians passively, but to take an active voice. I think we need to change the way that we approach the way that policies are made, we have to have more people involved more, especially youth!
Again, Youth are the leaders of tomorrow and if we can’t convince our own youth to become involved in current issues this will not be healthy for a sustainable community. I think one of the biggest issues with current society is that there is a lack of resources for you to get involved in politics and to get informed in policymaking and anything in regards to policies.
It’s so hard especially with elections coming up this year and I think one thing that we should be focussing on bridging the gap between knowledge about politicians and the different policies that they have and really having a deeper analysis on politics in the Canadian and North American landscape!
If we are able to bridge the gap between the divide and it is so important for Youth 360 to continue our mission to inform youth especially during this important time because we need to stay involved!
Social and political issues should continue to become more and more relevant and have more change acted upon because it is currently 2019. It’s almost going to be 2020 and every single year we are currently advancing at technology and innovations but we also have to meet our standards for human rights movements!
One of the biggest human rights is clean water, necessities basic rights so how are we going to be able to provide this human rights if we are not able to take care of the environment? This is one of the major issues that I currently really care about. We need to think about it on a globalistic perspective.
We should care about the environment and climate change because it’s not just about plants and animals, but the connections they have with us. Even though they are really the bases and foundation of our food chains, they also help us in all of society and provide a lot of resources (also are meant to be there naturally) but I think that they are very much connected to us. We rely on these resources and that is why we need to care about the environment.
It’s not about you know 20 years 30 years it’s about to future generations as well and I think it is very important in terms of being a civilian a citizen to care about different issues and to be involved.
I think that having a voice as a youth has a lot of barriers and even currently even last week I tried talking to one of my green leaders and it was quite difficult.
To actually have those ideas implemented is hard because of all of the barriers, and I’m talking about the difficulties when you are approaching cities. When you’re trying to make a statement it is very difficult to actually have a follow through due to priorities over other "things". It’s so hard because even when I was in my city and I was in a green team/green leaders training event, when I was trying to suggest ideas like you know, " as a big city of corporation you could totally collaborate with businesses tree nurseries to get a big discount on trees an offer that to civilians".
And then their response would sound like "there is this whole complex city with working with businesses as if you’re offering a discount to cities how are they going to be staying as a business to a lot of social and society because there are businesses they are not a charity". It makes it harder for people who actually want to plant trees just because it would help environment because it costs a lot higher because businesses are behind these nurseries and trees. It is so hard because we want to support local businesses but how are we going to be able to help low income families to also participate in this climate movement if we are currently having such big difficulties with accessibility? Having those barriers is why I think that we should be participating in conversations to work about a common resolution to these problems. I think that there should be a city wide tree nursery that the city owns a nonprofit so that citizens can buy wholesale, (good prices.. on a different note) I think that there are a lot of good things about the city that I really appreciate and I am very grateful to be in the city because it offers so much opportunities for youth currently, that I would highly suggest that everyone who is interested in getting involved to spare definitely go there.
I’m currently in Mississauga and there are so many youth events such as the We day Toronto 2019 approaches, or the me to we peel council. I’m currently the president of my school of me to we so I would definitely recommend anyone in the GTA or even if you’re in Canada get involved in your metre we make a difference and they were other clubs as well in Mississauga such as the MYAC which is the Mississauga youth activity Council and there is also another club or I would say association organization called PSPC and the PSPC stands for the Peel students Presidents Council and this council focusses on having the education ministries student trustees get involved as well .
Especially if you’re in grade 9 there is so much opportunity for growth and networking so if you are interested in becoming a teacher or student trustee or even getting involved and I would definitely recommend going to meetings when your grade 9 and definitely building up that leader ship. I think that commitment early on is so important and we’re going to be writing a blog post on that as well on how important it is to get involved in your community. (And consistency is key! In my opinion I think that one of the biggest issues again is that having that column or that blog where we do talk about our reactions to this blog posts. What do we think as youth about these media posts that are written by adults about youth? They really do put you through all of us different ages, different cultures all into one category... And that is a lot because the definitions of "youth" change constantly! Youth can be defined as a person under the age of 30! For the Canadian government or even just general activities or "youth" is anyone under 30...so that really does put a lot of the Canadian population under one word. "Youth" and even "millennials" (I think it’s anyone generation Z born after 1999 so that’s like a 2000s era.) We are able to achieve so much more if we were not categorized under such labels, and how we can we improve the circumstances if we are constantly being placed under labels that define our success?
I am so tired and just sick of seeing all these different issues in terms of stereotyping. Whether its gender or culture, the time I was called a "stressed out students because I'm asian" or anything on that radar.
I have many stories to share and I will be sharing all of them. I think that feminism empowers of all genders, and is important that we really understand the definitions of the powerful words. (And how we talk about these topics the manners and undertones for any words) Gender stereotypes are really bad because, as someone in high school who has currently learned psychology, all these courses teach us about stereotype threat. I didn’t really realize that the girls and woman are really put under a lot of pressure and stereotype threat which is a psychological theory that's been proven through many studies. It’s a psychological study or even a theory that people who are judged/treated diferently based on their minority status or something they suspect to be a "weakness", these people won't feel that great. The result of people being treated badly is they themselves feel degraded and again in psychology we learn about this, the way that even minorities can feel a negative association with their cultures based on their interactions with their new society.
As a result, when we learn about the cultural or more the social components or the levels of analysis, (in terms of psychology for my own curriculums) we learn about dapper concepts.
Marginalization and the different types of assimilation that cultures can feel are really interwebbed. (It should be taught in all schools) When they’re in a group and in the social levels we learn about how cultures who are stereotyped face stereotype threat.
Thanks for reading this long discussion today!
