Model Parliament 2020: Recap & Tips

Model Parliament is an intensive, three-day program at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario where high-school students act as MPPs, learn the parliamentary process, and debate original bills. It brings together students from across the province for workshops, caucus meetings, and time in the Chamber.

Official info and application details are on the Legislative Assembly’s site: Model Parliament for High School Students.

My Role: Brampton East, Green Party Delegate

I represented Brampton East as a Green Party delegate. Given my interest in environmental initiatives, I focused on bringing practical ideas and questions to our caucus discussions.

What We Worked On: Tackling Plastic Waste

Our caucus explored solutions to plastic pollution. We drafted a bill aimed at improving disposal practices and clarifying when certain plastics should be treated as hazardous. The day was packed—brainstorming, cross-party discussions, and iteration to strengthen the bill before debate.

Key Lessons I Learned

  • Define terms clearly: precise definitions prevent confusion during debate and in the bill text.
  • Cite credible sources: verify statistics and use consistent, reputable references.
  • Pressure-test early: ask other parties for feedback; anticipate objections and address them in your amendments.
  • Structure your argument: Problem → Evidence → Policy → Implementation → Impact; then recap in 20–30 seconds.
  • Embrace amendments: critique makes bills better; revise quickly and keep the goal in sight.

Advice for Future Delegates

  • Read the briefing package and note the standing orders/procedure you’ll need on the floor.
  • Prepare a one-page caucus memo: define the problem, 3 policy options, your pick, and a cost/benefit note.
  • Coordinate roles: assign sponsor, seconder, researcher, and whip to keep debate tight and on-message.
  • Practice speaking: time a 60–90 second statement with a clear opener and closing call-to-action.
  • Network with everyone: introduce yourself outside your party—coalitions pass bills.

Make the Most of the Experience

Say yes to conversations, photos, and post-session meetups. The program is short and the friendships are real—these are tomorrow’s leaders and future collaborators. Take the first step and start the conversation.

Reminder: You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Apply even if you’re unsure—you’ll learn a ton either way.
